Our new opening-accelerating system for rescue-parachutes "Ram-Air-Pockets",  which is a standard feature at the Annular classic, Annular EVO and Piccolo EVO, is now also available for all other current independence round-canopies as an upgrade!

Die Ram-Air-Pockets bestehen aus zwei kleinen parabelförmigen Taschen, die an zwei gegenüberliegenden Bahnen des Rettungsgeräts außen an der Basis aufgenäht werden. Dadurch wird das Öffnungsverhalten bereits während der Streckphase und bei niedrigen Geschwindigkeiten sehr positiv beeinflusst.

The Ram-Air-Pockets are two small parabolic-shaped pockets; that are sewn on two opposing segments of the parachute´s base at the outer edge. During the ‘elongation-phase’ of the rescue-parachute (and especially at low speeds) opening, these pockets have a very positive influence on the opening behaviour of the rescue-parachute.

Denn diese beiden Pockets füllen sich aufgrund ihrer Lage, ihrer Form und ihres geringen Volumens sehr leicht, unabhängig in welchem Winkel die Anströmung stattfindet. Der dadurch an der Außenseite der Kappe induzierte Widerstand sorgt dafür, dass sich die Basis des Rettungsgeräts schneller öffnet, was ein Einströmen der Luft in die Kappe erleichtert.

Because these pockets get filled with air fast and easily (due to their position, shape and small volume), no matter which angle the air is flowing; the induced drag at the rescue-canopy´s outer side makes the opening of the parachute´s base faster, which makes it easier for the air to flow inside.

Somit findet die komplette Öffnung des Rettungsgeräts deutlich schneller statt, was im Falle einer Notöffnung - vor allem knapp über Grund - lebenswichtig sein kann!

Because of this, the complete opening sequence of the parachute will happen much faster, this would be essential in an emergency deployment, especially if flying at low level.

Funktionsweise der Ram-Air-Pockets: Hier seht Ihr anhand von zwei Bilderfolgen wie die Ram-Air-Pockets im Detail funktionieren. Die ersten beiden Bilder zeigen das Öffnungsverhalten bei Anströmung des Rettungsgeräts von unten. Die nächsten beiden Bilder zeigen, dass die Ram-Air-Pockets eben auch funktionieren selbst wenn sie von oben oder aus einem anderen vermeintlich ungünstigeren Winkel angeströmt werden! Weiter unten findet Ihr noch ein Video, dass die Ram-Air-Pockets in Aktion zeigt.

How do the Ram-Air-Pockets work: Here you see two sequences showing how the Ram-Air-Pockets work. The first two pictures show the opening behaviour as the air flows in from the bottom. The next two pictures show that the Ram-Air-Pockets still work even when the airflow is from the wrong direction. Below the pictures you find a video which shows the Ram-Air-Pockets in action.

Das Rettungsgerät wird von unten angeströmt. Die Ram-Air-Pockets werden aufgrung ihrer Lage außen am Rettungsgerät und ihres geringen Volumens sofort gefüllt. Die Basis des Rettungsgeräts ist noch komplett geschlossen, was bedeutet dass ohne Ram-Air-Pockets noch keine Öffnung eingeleitet werden würde.

The direction of the airstream is from the bottom upwards. Because of the position at the outer side of the rescue-parachute and because of the small volume, the Ram-Air-Pockets get filled with air immediately. The base of the parachute is still completely closed, what means that without the Ram-Air-Pockets the opening would not yet be initialised.

Anders jedoch mit den neuen independence Ram-Air-Pockets: Der durch die aufgeblasenen Pockets an der Basis induzierte Widerstand hebt die äußersten Bahnen des Rettungsgeräts nach außen oben an. Somit kann nun die anströmende Luft unter diese äußersten Bahnen des Rettungsgeräts einströmen, und diese somit schneller befüllen. Der komplette Rettungsschirm öffnet dadurch deutlich schneller!

Not so with the new independence Ram-Air-Pockets: The inflated pockets induced drag at the canopy´s base lifts up the outer segments of the parachute. So the air can now flow underneath the outer segments of the rescue-parachute and inflate it much faster and more easily. The complete rescue-parachute opens much faster!

In diesem Bild erfolgt die Anströmung nun schräg von oben. Eine für die Öffnung eines Rettungsgeräts denkbar ungünstige Anströmrichtung! In der Praxis kommt jedoch genau diese Anströmung dann vor, wenn der Pilot das Rettungsgerät geworfen hat, und sich dieses während seiner Streckphase kurzzeitig eher neben oder gar unter dem Piloten befindet. Im Bild gut zu erkennen ist, wie die Bahnen des Rettungsgeräts nach hinten geblasen werden. Die Ram-Air-Pockets füllen sich aber wegen ihres dreidimenionalen, parabel-förmigen Schnitts entgegen der Anströmrichtung!

This picture shows the air flowing diagonally from upside down. This direction of the airflow is obviously not good for the filling or opening of a rescue-parachute. In practice though, this is exactly what happens once the pilot has thrown the rescue-parachute and it is either beside or below the pilot for a short time during the elongation-phase of the rescue-parachute. In the picture you can see how the segments of the parachute are blown backwards. However, due to the three-dimensional, parabolic-shape; the Ram-Air-Pockets get filled with air even against the airflow direction!

Und auch das Anheben der äußersten Bahnen erfolgt, bedingt durch die nun gefüllten Ram-Air-Pockets, entgegen der eigentlichen Anströmrichtung. Somit wird wiederum ein Einströmen der Luft ins Kappeninnere und die gesamte Öffnung des Rettungsgeräts erleichtert und beschleunigt.

Because the now ‘fully filled’ Ram-Air-Pockets (plus the outer segments of the parachute) are lifting upwards against the airflow direction. This again enables the air to get inside the canopy much easier, which in turn makes the complete opening time much faster.

Fazit: Die Ram-Air-Pockets ermöglichen eine bei Rundkappen bis dato nie dagewesene Erhöhung der Öffnungssicherheit und Verkürzung der Öffnungszeit. Da gerade bei Notöffnungen knapp über Grund jeder Meter Höhe zählt, ist ein Nachrüsten mit den Ram-Air-Pockets ein gute Investition für Deine Sicherheit!

Summary: The Ram-Air-Pockets offer an outstanding improvement in the opening-reliability, plus a reduction in the opening time. This has never been reached before with round-canopies. Because every meter of height is important in the case of an emergency deployment (especially at low level), the upgrade of your rescue-parachute with the Ram-Air-Pockets is a very good investment for your safety!
